Every address the office arranges rides from lies in the northern part of New Castle County, Delaware, from Claymont at the state line down to Bear, Delaware City and Saint Georges, and the other end of each ride is Philadelphia International Airport. Reading the table, column by column

Rows are grouped by the city name the post office prints on the mail. Wilmington appears on ten ZIPs, Newark on four, and eight names cover a single ZIP each: Claymont, New Castle, Hockessin, Bear, Rockland, Yorklyn, Delaware City and Saint Georges. Take 19720 as an example: mailed as New Castle, it holds Wilmington Manor, Minquadale and Hares Corner, sits 28.9 miles from the terminals and starts at $160 for a sedan and $215 for an SUV.

Distances were taken by road at a quiet hour, so treat the minutes as a floor; rush hours on I-95 between Wilmington and the airport add time, and a pickup time should allow for it. Each row runs from left to right in the same order, and every column answers one plain question about your address:

Why price by ZIP instead of town?

A city name on an envelope says little about the drive. The ten Wilmington ZIPs start at 15.9 miles from the terminals in 19810 and reach 30.6 miles in 19808, a spread of 14.7 miles and about 20 minutes at a quiet hour. Their sedan figures run from $130 to $160 for that reason alone. A ZIP page sets out the roads, miles and figures for one area only, as the page for the airport transfer from New Castle, DE to PHL does for 19720.

Place names and postal lines part ways too. The place called Bear has its own ZIP, 19701, yet much of Bear sits inside 19702, which is mailed as Newark. The four Newark ZIPs run from 31.7 to 37.4 miles, and a separate page lists the airport transfer fares for the Newark, DE ZIP codes together. Pricing by the five digits of the pickup or drop-off address ties the figure to where the house stands.

Edges of the area on every side

One end of every ride is an address in one of these 22 ZIPs, and the other end is the airport itself. Together they make up New Castle County north of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal; the ZIP codes below the canal sit outside the area the office takes rides from, and the request form says so when one of them is typed in.

Along the canal, two ZIPs reach farther than the area does. In 19701, the strip along the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal at the southern edge, around Parkside and Dragon Run, lies beyond the area the office arranges rides from, and addresses there are not taken. 19702 has a smaller canal-side strip around Goose Point in the same position, handled the same way. Every other address in both ZIPs belongs to the area.
